We sat down with the Founder and CEO of Shelissa Organics, Shelissa Kearney to find out some fun facts about what makes this business mogul so inspiring to be around. We talked about her favorite beauty products, books, places to travel and what inspires her.
You created your company close to 20 years ago. What advice do you have for up and coming entrepreneurs?
Do what you're passionate about and it will never feel like work. It's not easy but you will enjoy the journey.
Tell us something interesting about your childhood?
I skipped 1st grade and being the youngest in a class had its disadvantages. To compound matters, I graduated high school a year ahead of schedule. I think it made me work harder because challenges were all around me.
What are your favorite books?
I love to read so while that seems like a tough question to answer, its simple. "Snow Falling on Cedars" by Steve Gutterson will always remain one of my top five, and Marcel Proust's "Swann's Way," a volume in the novel "In Search of Lost Time". Both books, while completely different, are powerful love stories and worth the energy to read. Another one in my book stack that I find fascinating is "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. It's composed of a book of letters written to one character to another, humor, love, friendship...you know the basic recipe for greatness!
What is your favorite music or musician?
Harry Connick, Jr. Even my dog loves Harry's music.
Say no more.
What are your go-to beauty products?
I do my best to make healthy skincare choices and support women owned companies. My staple products are Shelissa Organics Lip Balm for everyday, a gold eye shadow, a tinted moisturizer I use as a concealer as I forgo foundation these days, and Christian Dior mascara in brown for a day look. Most women wear black mascara for day and night, and a beautiful soft brown around the eye gives you a more subtle and natural look that shows effort but not too much.
What is your best beauty secret to pass along?
I don't know that it is actually a secret; I learned during my years modeling to enhance my natural beauty and not to cover it. Highlighting and contouring is great and has its place but nothing in this world looks more beautiful than healthy, radiant skin. I say own what you have and make it work for you. Love yourself.
You love architecture, design, and traveling. Where is a place you haven't traveled to that you want to visit?
That is a difficult question! I want to see everything. At the top of my list, there's a small village in the Bernese Overland region of Switzerland my grandfather's family is named for called Wengen. I'm looking forward to taking in the views of Aletsch Glaier and seeing where it all began for my family.
What inspires you the most?
People doing good. Interesting people with good intentions triumph every time over someone who his merely successful. I think you can find inspiration everywhere you look if you take the time to enjoy the moments.
Last question, if you could do anything in the world what would you do?
Meet Mark Twain, Winston Churchill, Amelia Earhart, and encourage letter writing...because it documents and preserves history. And save the bees.
